About checking our phone in the morning

I have heard of this advice before - that you shouldn`t check your phone in the morning right when you wake up. While I don`t reply to every message I see, I still check my phone before my morning routine starts, be it because it is a habit or to reply to important messages because I am afraid I wouldn`t be able to then keep up. But this is what it is exactly about - that as soon as I check the phone, I react to others` messages and energies rather than setting my own energy and needs first.

I have read several times that when you just woke up, you are in a so-called "malleable" state - your mind had rested throughout the night and you seem to somehow be connected to the Universe or the unconsciousness. So it is apparently crucial in this state to be aware what you want to do, think, and feel in these "malleable" moments before the day kicks in. Of course, sometimes we feel we cannot really control the morning moment, like me - I observed as soon as I wake up, that my mind chatter starts. Nevertheless, whether I want to add others` mind chatters to mine by checking my phone is something I can control and decide.

A long time ago, I also decided to try being offline during weekends, to really embrace my free time and be present. It was such a nice experience that has allowed me to calm down, be more energized (because less energy is used or consumed by others), and to also slow down my mind chatter because my mind had less things to think about. So while I have experienced the benefits of offline time, I somehow still had the habit of checking my phone right when I was awake.

So here are some reminders to help you follow a new habit:

  • All the messages and emails can wait at least 5min or 1 hour (depending on how long your morning routine is) - considering also that in the morning people rarely can really execute.

  • Your wellbeing is the starting point of your day and energy - you set the tone how you want to experience the day, don`t give away your power so soon.

  • As soon as the day kicks in, you will be surely busy and bombarded by outside requests - so give yourself the time in the morning to increase your productivity and happiness (s. also Robin Sharma`s "5AM Club"). While throughout the day you can always take 2min mindfulness breaks, the morning time is the best time you can define for yourself before others knock on your door.

  • Break the cycle by allowing your "being" to live - given you will be living in a "doing" mode 9-12 hours a day, create a balance between your being and doing. As we know, our being can steer creativity, inspirations, and self-care for our mind, body, and soul.

  • Gain back your power and don`t let a device rule your life! - If you honestly reflect that it may be your ego wanting to feel seen and important, then explore this with a meditation or release all your thoughts and wants in your journal.

  • We need to regularly train our muscles of attention, focus, and productivity - so we need to show up in our "morning gym" to get fit in our mind.

  • Be kind and patient with yourself when you introduce a new habit - (i.e. not checking your phone first thing in the morning), even if you feel you need to remember something before you forget it, write it in a classic notebook (or trust that you will remember it if it is important :)).

I understand if we have different lifestyles (e.g. family commitments) or working shifts that may not give us that room to play with for our morning routine - you can just start small and experiment what works best for you, for your wellbeing and logistics. The parameters for a successful morning habit can, of course, be also applied to our evenings, the time before we go to bed. One habit I have abandoned for a long time now is to read news because of their negative energies and fear-based sensational stories, and I still am informed and get the most important information when I need to (e.g. Covid). So explore also for you whether you want to check the news after you wake up or before you go to sleep.
